Erroneous data that was submitted by the All India Council for Technical Education pertaining to approvals and additional intake of students in engineering colleges has affected the state government's plans of commencing Eamcet counselling within a week. The colleges complained that they were given additional intake in engineering courses which they had never applied for. There were also complaints that the AICTE refused to entertain fresh approvals despite all the required norms being met.
Due to this, the state government now has no clarity on the availability of the actual number of seats in engineering colleges. The government has decided to send officials to AICTE, New Delhi to seek clarity on the number of seats to be included in Eamcet counselling. The AICTE is expected to issue a statement on the actual intake of students on July 12.
“We have not received any official confirmation from AICTE till now on the availability of engineering seats in the state though there were reports that the state got an additional intake of 40,000 to 50,000 seats to the already existing 2.85 lakh seats. But we cannot go by reports and start counselling. We need official confirmation from the AICTE,” said Dr Rajashekar Reddy, secretary, AP State Council of Higher Education. The decision follows previous experiences wherein the counselling process ran into trouble after the officials had initiated the process without obtaining confirmation from AICTE.
The original plan was to complete the counselling by the end of this month and start classes for first year students from August 3. However, lack of clarity from AICTE on the available seats is expected to delay things further.
