The West Bengal government is set to oppose the Medical Council of India's proposal of admitting students to the medical colleges in the state under the common medical test.
“We are going to fight against it,” said Sushanta Bannerjee, Director (Medical Education), Government of West Bengal. He and state Health Secretary Sanjay Mitra are leading a tema of officials to Delhi where they would discuss the issue with officials of Medical Council of India (MCI).
The state government will demand a significant proportion of reservation for the state students in the local medical colleges. Another demand, which the state government will be pressing for, is providing the question papers of medical examination in Bengali.The MCI has decided to hold a common entrance test (CET), to be conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education, from next year for admitting students to the 35,000-odd MBBS seats across the country. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court gave an order in favour of MCI on the issue. Earlier, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had written to Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad expressing the state government's unwillingness to admit students through the CET.
