Those tedious hours spent poring over school books may well be passé. Animation, graphics and photographs will be the new tools for teaching. And, Gujarat could well be a pathbreaker in this regard.
Imagine going on virtual trips into space to take a closer look on Earth and other planets or diving deep underwater to swim with a blue whale. All these and much more will be possible once the e-content project of the state education department is implemented.
In two months, teaching and learning in Gujarat' government schools will undergo a metamorphosis. The state education department has given 11 computers and a 42 inch LCD TV to all the 6,00 secondary and higher secondary government schools. The Rs 8 crore project will culminate with each school being given the e-content software and CD.
The e-content, said sources in the state education department, is being prepared on the basis of course curriculum of classes 9 to 12. "This is a pilot project.
The idea is to keep up with changing times and making learning easy through an audio-visual experience," said a senior official of the state education department. The state government has actually got a copyright on the econtent to ensure exclusivity. The Gujarat government has hired professor Marmar Mukhopadhyay, former director of NIEPA, as the consultant for this project. "Prof Mukhopadhyay has been hired to ensure quality and style of academic material," said sources in the education department.
Prof Mukhopadhyay, who is now the honorary director of Educational Technology and Management Academy (ETMA), told TOI, "The e-content project for schools is the first of its kind in India. My responsibility is to focus on quality and design."
